CFTC Holds Cybersecurity Roundtable March 18

As noted in our previous entry, staff from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) held a Public Roundtable on Cybersecurity and System Safeguards Testing on March 18, 2015. The Roundtable, which included participants from the private sector and government agencies, could be a kick-off event for a larger CFTC initiative to address issues related to cybersecurity. The Roundtable was comprised of four panels that addressed the need for testing, vulnerability assessments, key controls testing, and business continuity and disaster recovery testing. In this respect, key questions to consider moving forward include the following:

  • What should be the CFTC’s role with respect to systems testing and cybersecurity?
  • Will the CFTC impose new obligations on market participants regarding systems safeguard testing or reporting?
  • Will the CFTC join any information sharing group, and if so, how will it ensure that personally identifiable information is not shared?
  • How should business continuity testing evolve to address new cybersecurity threats that threaten financial stability?
